Chandigarh Turning Smarter & Greener. UT Admn Buys 20 Electric Buses

Chandigarh Administration is taking the necessary steps to make Chandigarh a green city. A request is to be issued for proposals on Saturday to purchase 20 electric buses. The time period for this proposal would be fifteen days.

Chandigarh transport secretary, KK Jindal was estimating that the bus would be in possession of the UT administration within two months, after finalizing the seller and completing the paperwork.

UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore had initiated the project in November 2016 after which the electric buses were introduced under the Smart City plan. Buses of various companies were tested by the administration in August 2017.

Info About The Bus

The buses can seat around 26 passengers and safety features also have been equipped. There is also seating provision for two differently abled persons. Each bus would cost around 1.5 Crore. On the other hand, the diesel buses with similar facilities would cost around 25 Lakh rupees.

The current fleet strenth of CTU is around 578, of which 392 commute within Chandigarh.

The electric buses have been introduced at a time when the air quality of the city has actually worsened. But the contribution of vehicular emissions is still to be assessed, so it is difficult to calculate the drop in pollution levels of the Tricity.
